Stick drivers - which driving method saves more gas?

which saves more gas?

shift gears late (about 2k-4k rotations per minute?) and step on pedal lightly

or shift gears early (1k-3k rpm) and step on pedal harder
Stick drivers - which driving method saves more gas?
You should look up the peak torque rating of your engine. It will be X ft. lbs.@ Y rpm. For example, my engine gives 177 ft.lb @ 1900 rpm. Go lightely on the pedal up to 500 rpm less than the peak torque and then upshift. As a foundation, you should be current on your tuneup oil and filter change, and air filter. Check that your tires are properly inflated, and make sure you don%26#039;t have %26quot;junk in the (car) trunk%26quot;. Windows closed and AC on above 40 mph.
Stick drivers - which driving method saves more gas?
it is called progressive shifting. low gears (1-3) have little change in ratio. low gears, depending on incline and load, can be shifted before two thousand rpm. long gears should be shifted 2-4 thousand. driving speeds, good rpm%26#039;s, seem to be between 1800-3000 rpm. but, make sure not to %26quot;lug%26quot; the engine. if you want real answers, buy a vacuum gage.

Gas Gas Gas?

Just curious to hear what you all think about these gas prices and how ridiculously high they are getting.

This summer is going to suck. Right now gas prices in my town are $4.20 and they just keep going up.

We need to do something about this!

I wish everyone would boycott gas !!!
Gas Gas Gas?
Go ahead start boycotting right now! I%26#039;m sure the whole country will line up right behind you.
Gas Gas Gas?
Not to mention, Exxon Mobil screwed up their relations with Venezuela and President Chavez just cut the united states off from their oil. So, that means even less that what we%26#039;ve had here. Yes, Exxon Mobil is no longer welcome in Venezuela. (We%26#039;re screwed.)
Reply:gas has already been at over 4$/gal in illinois

for over 3 wks already. i think some people are

starting to get use to it, but some people are

changing their habits and using more transit,

carpooling, 4-day work weeks are being implemented

here, and even telecommuting to eliminate the

drive.

as far as the prices tho%26#039;, it is economics - the

law of supply and demand. yes, the oil companies

are making obscene profits, but it is because

there is sooooo much volume in sales. people keep

buying gas and still keep driving. the oil

companies have no incentive to lower the price of

fuel, and they are not a public charity.

prices will fall when people quit buying so much

gas.

as far as Congress and government, i%26#039;m of 2

thoughts. the govt keeps talking about capitalism

and free markets, especially when it comes to

trains, planes, and buses. if the free market is

good for them, then the automobile needs to go

totally free market too, and that should result in

higher gas prices, as well as toll roads and

higher licensing fees.

if you think that autos should continue getting a

subsidy, then advocate that trains, buses, bike

lanes, and sidewalks get more subsidy too. too

many people drive bcs most govt money is spent for

free roads and expressways, while expecting that

railroads have to be profitable, and the lack of

sidewalks discourage pedestrianism.

as a note, us gas prices are still dirt cheap,

even at 4$/gallon, it is too cheap still. too many

people are still driving, there is still road and

expressway congestion, and there are over 40,000

auto crash fatalities a year nationwide bcs too

many people are driving and not enough are using

buses, trains, planes, and bikes.

in canada, my friends say that gas is about 1.40

C$/litre (aprox equiv to 5.30 U$/gal), and a

friend in germany reports that last week, gas was

1.50 鈧?litre (aprox equiv to 10.40 U$/gal). so, go

to canada or europe and drive, then you can

complain about the price of gas.

america has it good in comparison.
Reply:The prices are, indeed, outrageous! This price increase is also boosting the cost of public transportation. Unfortunately, most motor vehicles, including cabs and buses run on gasoline and the people who are being hit the hardest, those who must commute to work (early morning hours and distances greater than 3 to 5 miles) and the physically challenged have few, if any, alternatives to driving. Car pooling is difficult for many because people who work in one location live in many locations that are far apart from each other. To boycott gas one would have to walk, bicycle, carpool every day and/or stay home. Another possibility is that some places of employment may soon be required to pay the employee the cost of his commute over the first 5 miles (when the employee cannot select his/her work location) or give all commuting workers a tax break to ease the gas penalty on those workers because some employees get to live on site or to choose their work locations close to home. Further, the people who represent the public in Congress are going to have to be forced to get involved in taking action against price gouging stations as well as monitoring the sources of oil and the companies that are always having a negative impact on the American consumer.

Do things get shipped out on Sundays if said that shipment takes 24 hrs.???

generally not. but each company can be different, so you should read their FAQ or contact them.

all the carriers (USPS, FedEx, DHL, etc) have workers working 7 days a week, and generally each of them offer a sunday pick up or delivery.

some companies (ie like a Ford Motor assembly plant or a wal-mart warehouse) ship and receive product 24/7, so carriers are operating to meet this demand. we have all the carriers, as well as trucking companies, contract carriers, taxi cabs even, all operating everyday and every night to transport freight and people around as needed (and part of why cars cost a lot to make...)

many companies (perhaps like web retailers) may operate a shipping dept 7 days a week, but many do not. however, even if shipping dept is open 7 days, some companies will not have sunday pickups bcs they, being small, generally have to pay extra for carriers to come by on sunday. but not always. and, generally, during november/december, many retailers and carriers DO add sunday pickup too, as there is so much holiday shopping demand.

several variables, so hard to say without more details. it sounds like you maybe ordered something on the web? but i dont know for sure what you are asking for, if you own a business and want to ship things out, then yes it can be done.
Do things get shipped out on Sundays if said that shipment takes 24 hrs.???
they probally mean Business days (not weekends)

most warehourse are closed on Sundays and delivery companies dont even pick up on Sundays,,
Do things get shipped out on Sundays if said that shipment takes 24 hrs.???
Rarely, because Sunday is not a business day. Only specially priced mail-overnight priority mail shipments may be done in 24 hours wherever there are 24 hour postal offices open in the city of shipment and in the city of arrival.

Whats the fine for doing 63 in a 55 work zone? With no signs telling me it was a work zone?

I was turning onto a highway, and there was a work truck in the middle of the road, so I looked for signs, to see if it was a construction zone. There was no signs, so I was trying to set the cruise control and pushed the buttons too many times, got to 63 and the officer just caught me as i was trying to slow down. When I asked what I should have been doing, he said 55. But I thought the speed limit was lower in work zones? I honestly thought I was doing 55 because my SUV just doesn%26#039;t seem like your really doing the speed you are.
Whats the fine for doing 63 in a 55 work zone? With no signs telling me it was a work zone?
sounds like a classic case for traffic court! gets tons a pictures for the judge. maps, any documents you can find.

lots of visual aids!!!
Whats the fine for doing 63 in a 55 work zone? With no signs telling me it was a work zone?
they dont have to be signs the work truck should be been your %26quot;sign: where there cones along the highway too?

yes? thats another %26quot;sign%26quot;
Reply:doesnt matter if signage is up or not, if you see work vehicles, as well as if you see disabled vehicles on the side of the road, police/fire/emgy vehicles, etc, you need to slow down and use caution anyway.

you should NEVER use cruise control in or near a work vehicle, emgy vehicle, or in a construction zone. you need to have full control of your vehicle, so you should not be setting the cruise in the above case. if you are using the cruise ctrl already when you approach a construction zone, you need to temporarily disable the cruise until you are past the work area.

a designated work zone generally is set up for an extended construction period, and usually has a lower speed limit, generally 10-15 mph less than the normal speed limit for that segment. these are guidelines only, variations can occur depending on the road, the conditions, the type of work, and traffic patterns.

the fine for speeding at all depends on the state it occurred in. some states now have rules where fines are DOUBLED for any traffic violations within a construction zone. Illinois has even started using automated camera police vehicles to just mail the ticket (which is 375$ btw) to your home, so you can be speeding in a work zone and not even know you got caught til a week later. as an extra note, in illinois, if you hit a construction worker, you can get up to 10,000$ fine AND up to 14 years in prison - and it gets even worse from there if the worker actually dies.

so see, there can be variations based on jurisdiction.

and finally, excuse of using an SUV doesnt cut it. it is YOUR vehicle, you need to learn how to control it. if you cant control it and follow the rules, then you need to quit driving it, bcs you are endangering workers, police, and other drivers. driving an SUV does not give you special entitlement.

sorry i dont mean to sound harsh, but just advising you to not pull the SUV defence to a judge, he wont buy it and will tell you the same thing, and most likely will be least inclined to do anything to help you, in fact may even increase the ticket penalty in cases where there is judicial discretion (like Illinois).

and dont tell the judge you were trying to set or use the cruise control in a work zone either, you will simply add to your troubles and to your fines.

St Andrews Cross used for Level Crossing warning to Drivers?

Here in New Zealand, the St Andrews Cross can be found between opposing gauges, for Up and Down Trains. Is this going to become as extinct as Dodos, or be kept forever and a day ?
