I was turning onto a highway, and there was a work truck in the middle of the road, so I looked for signs, to see if it was a construction zone. There was no signs, so I was trying to set the cruise control and pushed the buttons too many times, got to 63 and the officer just caught me as i was trying to slow down. When I asked what I should have been doing, he said 55. But I thought the speed limit was lower in work zones? I honestly thought I was doing 55 because my SUV just doesn%26#039;t seem like your really doing the speed you are.
Whats the fine for doing 63 in a 55 work zone? With no signs telling me it was a work zone?
sounds like a classic case for traffic court! gets tons a pictures for the judge. maps, any documents you can find.
lots of visual aids!!!

they dont have to be signs the work truck should be been your %26quot;sign: where there cones along the highway too?
yes? thats another %26quot;sign%26quot;
Reply:doesnt matter if signage is up or not, if you see work vehicles, as well as if you see disabled vehicles on the side of the road, police/fire/emgy vehicles, etc, you need to slow down and use caution anyway.
you should NEVER use cruise control in or near a work vehicle, emgy vehicle, or in a construction zone. you need to have full control of your vehicle, so you should not be setting the cruise in the above case. if you are using the cruise ctrl already when you approach a construction zone, you need to temporarily disable the cruise until you are past the work area.
a designated work zone generally is set up for an extended construction period, and usually has a lower speed limit, generally 10-15 mph less than the normal speed limit for that segment. these are guidelines only, variations can occur depending on the road, the conditions, the type of work, and traffic patterns.
the fine for speeding at all depends on the state it occurred in. some states now have rules where fines are DOUBLED for any traffic violations within a construction zone. Illinois has even started using automated camera police vehicles to just mail the ticket (which is 375$ btw) to your home, so you can be speeding in a work zone and not even know you got caught til a week later. as an extra note, in illinois, if you hit a construction worker, you can get up to 10,000$ fine AND up to 14 years in prison - and it gets even worse from there if the worker actually dies.
so see, there can be variations based on jurisdiction.
and finally, excuse of using an SUV doesnt cut it. it is YOUR vehicle, you need to learn how to control it. if you cant control it and follow the rules, then you need to quit driving it, bcs you are endangering workers, police, and other drivers. driving an SUV does not give you special entitlement.
sorry i dont mean to sound harsh, but just advising you to not pull the SUV defence to a judge, he wont buy it and will tell you the same thing, and most likely will be least inclined to do anything to help you, in fact may even increase the ticket penalty in cases where there is judicial discretion (like Illinois).
and dont tell the judge you were trying to set or use the cruise control in a work zone either, you will simply add to your troubles and to your fines.
